Maybe you want to detach yourself from the hustle and bustle of an ultra-busy life, or maybe you can feel the call of the countryside after spending too much time in the city or maybe you’re looking to spend some days away from the ultra-connected world.

Gozo is the antidote to all this.

The charming island in the middle of the Mediterranean will be a great haven where you can recharge.

Here are some useful tips:

1. Book a farmhouse

If you want to get away from it all, book yourself one of the traditional farmhouses tucked away in some alley or right in the middle of the Gozitan countryside. Echoing the farmstead, these holiday homes often offer superb and luxurious comfort whilst retaining the rural feel of the island.  Check out farmhouses in Gozo.

 2. Visit local bakeries

Ask the locals for the nearest bakery and check out their delicious bakes. Nothing beats the divine smell of freshly baked bread and there’s no doubt that you will find a variety of breads, rolls and local ftiras to enjoy.  Locally, bakeries will also bake special dishes like roasted onions and aubergines,  stuffed marrows and great local food according to the season.

3. Dine out at traditional restaurants and stop by at the village cafe’

Try some of the authentic Gozitan recipes like  rabbit stewed(stuffat tal-fenek)  or fried (fenek moqli), octopus(stuffat tal-qarnita), and roasted pork (majjal il-forn). You might also come across snails (bebbux) in a spicy, tomato sauce. For a quick snack ask for a ftira, a crusty type of bread, spread with a tomato paste (kunserva) with fillings such as tuna, sardines, olives, capers and onions.  Other versions of the ftira are in the form of a pizza and include ingredients like sliced potatoes, local sausage and fresh sheep/goats’ cheese.   Away from these typical Gozitan foods, stop by the village cafe’  or the Band Club bars for the traditional cup of tea which in Gozo is served in a glass tumbler.

4. Out and about in the countryside

Whether you’re idly hiking out, opting for some serious Nordic walking or simply taking a leisurely walk, Gozo’s countryside is a source of inspiration.  Follow the paths like the ones at Ta’ Ċenċ plateau, the Xlendi coastal area or hike along the saltpans on the northern side on the island.  You might even stumble on one of the few remaining shepherds out with his herd.

5. Don’t forget the farming estates

Make sure you include a visit to one of the farming estates where you can get a feel of the real Gozitan produce like carob syrup, olive oil and sundried tomatoes.  Check out the DOK Gozo wine and don’t forget to seek out authentic Gozitan honey.

And as a bonus, Gozo is not only about the countryside. The sea is always five minutes away. Exploring the coast, checking out the many inlets and coves will bring you in touch with nature too.
