It is no cliche that Gozo is often called the island for all seasons, and this is not a recent phenomenon. Even 150 years ago, Edward Lear, the English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, was so fascinated and seduced by the island that he had to go as far as creating a new word – he called the island of Gozo pomskizillious.

Undoubtedly, the countryside beckons in winter with its magical greenery dappled with flowering patches over the hills, meadows and valleys. Being out and about for walks, hikes, or picnics is always a joy, especially when you know you will return to a peaceful retreat or some cosy abode. Gozo offers idyllic accommodation options in terms of ambience, comfort and luxury. While the winter season is strongly tied to the Christmas feast, winter in Gozo is also brightened by the colourful bacchanalia of the Carnival festival.

Spring calls for more outdoor adventures amid the blooming countryside.

Abseiling, cycling, and even kayaking are exciting options in springtime. Beyond these activities, you can also enjoy diving (which is usually on all year round except for a brief hiatus during winter). The season is a favourite for many travellers who plan to visit the island during the Easter break. Easter in Gozo is not just a weekend event. As an island steeped in religious traditions and devotions, Gozo provides a unique experience in processions, exhibitions and activities tied to the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Once spring is over, it’s time for the rush of the summer  vibe.  The hot season is all about the outdoors and the vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere, complete with traditional colourful village feasts and an intense party music scene.  Head to the beach, enjoy the cool, scintillating waters and do not forget a dose of snorkelling.   Check out water sports activities such as jet skiing for a higher adrenalin rush.  If you’re more laid back, consider a boat ride around the island of Gozo or Comino.  In the evenings, there are many restaurants and dining options to consider.  If you’re keen on a sea-front table, booking is always advised.

Autumn is once again a welcome season after the hot summers, and travellers during this season get to enjoy an extended but less intense summer that allows one to be more laid back.    As the harvest season takes over the island, autumn ushers in the much-awaited opera season, reopening the cultural calendar after the summer celebrations.

Beyond all this, Gozo’s coast and countryside change from one palette to another over the seasons, making the island a magnificent source of inspiration.   The stunning natural landscapes, the rugged coastline, and the pristine beaches are all part of  the typical Gozitan postcard.  The historic and iconic landmarks such as the Citadel, Ġgantija Temples,  the  Xewkija windmill, and the coastal towers are always lined up, ready and waiting for the visitors to discover their story.  Gozo is an appealing all-year-round destination, and it is simply up to the traveller to pick the favourite time of the year to visit the island.
