More than the other towers, the Mġarr ix-Xini Coastal tower is truly off the beaten path.

However, the path that leads to the tower from the cove of Mġarr ix-Xini is a pleasant walk and there’s nothing to stop you to enjoy the hike to the tower

and the magnificent views of the channel from this vantage point during the day.

The major restoration works on this tower, which dates back to 1658/59, took place some 18 years ago, but recently the tower was given some upgrades to enhance the visitors’ experience.   Large information panels have been installed inside the tower to provide insight about the history of the tower, its architecture, its use and purpose.  New panels on the roof complement the bird’s eye view of the surroundings and each panel provides details about a particular aspect of the view from each viewpoint.

You can visit the tower on Sundays (weather permitting) between 10:30 and 12:30. The Wirt Għawdex flag is flown on the roof when the tower is open.

Recently, off-grid solar panels have been installed at the tower and these provide a sustainable lighting system for the outside perimeter of the tower for a few hours after sunset, depending on how much solar power was absorbed during daylight.  This downlighting minimizes light pollution but still gives the tower a magical appearance during the hours it is lit up.   The tower will not be open at this hour but the atmosphere of the place is truly spell-binding! Get your cameras ready.
