Gozo’s dreamy and tranquil characteristics are intertwined with a just-as-much colourful social life, so do not be surprised.

Especially when it comes to community life, celebrations, and passionate events.

Gozitans are bursting with the zest and flamboyance! Village feasts are a real exhibit of this but here’s a list of other places where to catch up with the locals:

1. The football clubs and the band clubs

Practically every village has its own football club located in the main square of the village. These clubs are a mecca for the fans and supporters not only during the football season (which in Gozo runs through autumn, winter and early spring) but throughout the whole year. Up till late at night, these clubs serve snacks and have their own bar, restaurant or pizzeria, making them a favourite hangout amongst locals. Like the football clubs, band clubs are another hotspot for local village gossip and for catching up with friends. It is typical of these clubs to hold snooker tournaments during the colder seasons, but in summer everyone is usually outside enjoying a drink in the evening.

2. In summer it’s beach, beach, beach and BBQs

For many Gozitans, the summer season means visiting the beach every day. Days are longer and the beach is truly 5 minutes away for most Gozitans. Thus a daily dip in the sea is like second nature for most of the locals. Friends will often extend the daily dip into evenings complete with BBQ, picnicking and dining al-fresco.

3. Dining out

In Gozo, you can find restaurants in every village and many locals have their own firm favourite which they keep returning to time and time again. During the weekend and on holidays, it is best to book ahead to avoid dissapointment.

4. Chilling out over a pint or two

Apart from the football and band club bars, Gozo provides many options in this regard. You will also find some very popular bars in most village squares. In Victoria, it-Tokk (Indpendence Square), St.George’s Square and St. Francis Square are 3 main gathering spots. If you prefer a sea-side zone, then we suggest you take note of the Mġarr Harbour area as this is currently one of ‘in’ places for night life in Gozo.

5. Dancing the night away

Needing no introduction, La Grotta, the night club overlooking the valley of Xlendi is the place to seek out if you’re after big parties, live-music and DJs.

Whether you’re after a colourful evening, or a more subdued mellow and rustic social setting, summers evenings in Gozo offer many opportunities to join the locals in enjoying the crisp summer evening breeze that the island offers.
