Every autumn, Gozo comes alive with one of its most distinctive cultural traditions: opera.
This year, audiences can look forward to Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata at the Aurora on 17 October, followed later in the month by Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Astra on 29 and 31 October.
Teatru tal-Opra Aurora: La Traviata

The first major opera of the autumn will take place at Teatru tal-Opra Aurora on Saturday, 17 October 2026.
For the Aurora, this is more than simply another opera production. La Traviata forms part of the celebrations marking 50 years since the official opening of the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora.
Interestingly, La Traviata also has its own history at the theatre. The opera was first performed at the Aurora on 28 April 1978, and the 2026 production returns to the title as a special 50th-anniversary presentation.
The opera will be performed in Italian with English subtitles, making it accessible both to seasoned opera lovers and to visitors experiencing Italian opera for the first time.
Verdi’s La Traviata, meaning “The Fallen Woman”, tells the tragic story of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan who falls in love with Alfredo Germont. Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’ La Dame aux Camélias, the opera explores love, sacrifice, illness and social expectations, combining lavish scenes with a deeply emotional story that remains one of the most celebrated works in the operatic repertoire.
Leading the musical forces for the Aurora production is Colin Attard, who will conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aurora Opera Chorus. The Aurora’s own chorus forms an important part of the theatre’s operatic tradition, while the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra provides the large-scale orchestral sound required by Verdi’s score.

Teatru Astra: Madama Butterfly

Later in October, the spotlight moves to Teatru Astra, where audiences will be treated to Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
The 2026 production is described by Teatru Astra as a brand-new production, continuing the theatre’s long-standing tradition of presenting large-scale operatic productions in Victoria.
The theatre’s annual opera has become one of the highlights of its cultural calendar and forms part of Festival Mediterranea, which has helped establish the Astra as an important venue for opera and classical music in Gozo.
The Astra’s production will bring together singers, musicians, chorus and production teams to recreate Puccini’s dramatic world.
A story of love, hope and heartbreak
Set in Japan, Madama Butterfly follows Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese woman who marries American naval officer B. F. Pinkerton. Their relationship becomes a tragic story of love, cultural misunderstanding and abandonment, beautifully captured through Puccini’s emotional score. Among the opera’s most famous moments is “Un bel dì vedremo”, Cio-Cio-San’s poignant aria expressing her hope that Pinkerton will one day return.
