Gozo’s Outdoor Spinning Festival - Visit Gozo

As we get closer to summer, Gozo’s active scene is also gearing up for its annual Spinning® event.  Spinning ® is originally an indoor cycling activity, dating back to 1989, but as Krzysztof Glab explains, it does not stop there.

As a globally recognised program, Spinning® is available in more than 80 countries and sports a team of almost 400,000 instructors worldwide.   The activity is focused on performance training and endurance building.  In Gozo, the annual Spinning® event will take place between June 26th and 30th.  It promises to be a five-day active experience that’s meant to take the participants into the outdoors, where rhythm and resistance fall into synch in an overarching exercise of motivation.

Krzysztof is a certified Physical Therapist and Personal Trainer who founded the Spinning® Power Zone Marathon in Poland in 2016.  Today, he is the Spinning® Education Coordinator for Malta, handling the annual event.  He first came to Gozo eight years ago on an ERASMUS project, and while working in the fitness industry, he developed Spinning® until it became his full-time job.  As typically happens, the island of Gozo worked its magic, and eight years later, Krzysztof is busy organising the fifth edition of the Spinning® festival.

When asked what makes Spinning® different, Krzysztof quickly explains that it is a comprehensive fitness program encompassing branded bikes and certified instructors.  The program is designed for everyday fitness enthusiasts, professional cyclists, athletes, and gym-goers who are after fun, music and relaxation.  As a physical activity, Spinning® is ideal for improving strength, endurance and stamina.  It is focused on lower-body training and benefits muscular strength, cardiovascular and nervous systems and the body’s metabolism.   Spinning® is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and is sometimes used as a rehabilitation tool.  Participants are usually adults (35+), but it is also open to younger people, older adults, and even kids.     One key feature of Spinning® is that it emphasises the mind-body connection and music and emotion are integral to the experience.   In fact, Spinning® instructors act as both coaches and DJs, aiming not only to achieve structured workouts for the participants but also stress relief, mental reset and an emotional uplift.

Though traditionally indoors, Gozo has opened up Spinning® to the outdoors, blending fitness with the island’s natural beauty.   Though programs are offered through all-year round at the gym, Krzysztof highlights that the key to the annual Spinning® Gozo event is the stunning backdrops where the events were held.  Previous editions at Dwejra, Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay and even the Żebbuġ Shooting Range offered an exciting fusion of leisure and wellness activities.  Typical highlights from this year’s program include Spinning® sessions at Ħondoq, followed by boat trips to Comino and guided meditation by breathing experts.  The beach at Ħondoq offers spectacular sunrise views, making it impossible not to feel inspired after a session there—made even more memorable when traditional Gozitan pastizzi are served, adding a delightful taste of local flavour.  The event is open to all, beginners and experts alike, and one can opt to book a single class or the full experience.   Krzysztof proudly shares that over the years, the event has attracted high-profile Spinning® instructors, master trainers, and enthusiasts from as far as Australia—transforming the Gozo edition into a truly international showcase and a vibrant meeting point for the global Spinning® community.

Preparations for the yearly event are high on Krzysztof’s agenda right now, and he’s fully focused on delivering an event that builds on previous success, where a strong sense of community prevails while providing a memorable experience for everyone involved.
